Neighbourhood

The Barceloneta is one of the four neighbourhoods (“barrios”) that form together the old city (“ciutat vella”) of Barcelona, its historical centre. You can therefore walk to most sites of interest of Barcelona, the only city in the world with 9 World Heritage Site buildings. Walk 10 to 15 minutes and you will be in the middle of the “Born”, the most medieval and trendiest section of the “Ribera” barrio. Walk another 5-10 minutes and you will be in the middle of the “Gothic” barrio, the most medieval and visited barrio.

Barceloneta has (within 200 meters from the house) a beach that has been rated “best urban beach in the world” and “third best beach in the world” by a 2005 Discovery Channel documentary. Follow the beach to the North-East and within 10 minutes of the house you will arrive at Port Olympic, where there are some of the most popular discotheques in Barcelona, right on the beach. Barceloneta itself is like a self-contained village with its own covered public market – with fresh fish and seafood, like the well known “Boqueria” market but smaller in size (and it is within 50 meters from the house) – as well as many bakeries (including the popular “Baluard” bakery, also 50 meters from the house), bars, restaurants and stores of all types. It used to be a edgy barrio inhabited by fishermen and dockers but, after the last docks were demolished and the beach extended as part of the public works carried out in the 90s for the Olympic Games, it has now become the barrio with the highest real estate prices. Nevertheless, it has retained a portion of its original inhabitants and has kept its popular spirit and local stores despite the constant flow of tourists.

In terms of transport, the Barceloneta metro station (L4 line) is if needed at 400 meters from the house, there are 8 different city bus lines that stop on the street “Passeig de Joan de Borbo” (within 200 meters), and the train station “Estacio de Francia” is at 10 minutes’ walk. How to come from the airport? Taxi costs about 32 euros including luggage and takes less than 30 minutes. If you are on a budget, take the train. Buy at the airport a 10-trip multipersonal train ticket for one zone (T-10 1 zone) for €10.30 (i.e. €1.03 per trip), which card can be used by many persons at the same time and/or on subsequent days for taking the train, bus or metro. The train line that goes to the airport is the “R2 North” and the train line that goes to Estacio de Franca is the “R2 South” so you will have to stop for about 15 minutes (either 5, 15 or 25 minutes) at the “Psg Gracia” station and wait (on the same dock) for the next train having for terminus Estacio de Franca. There is one train leaving the airport every 30 minutes and you must then count one hour before arriving at the house (35 minutes of train + 15 minutes average waiting period at “Psg Gracia” + 10 minutes’ walk). There are also buses, which are more frequent but more expensive and which stop a bit far from the house (30 minutes’ walk).

How to come by car? There is a parking (“Litoral Port”) in the Olympic Port, within 10 minutes of the house, where you can park for €39.80 / 5 days (+€7.50 per additional day): http://www.bsmsa.es/mobilitat/index.php/bsm-car-parks/advantages-and-discounts/special-rates
